The final Trans Australian Airlines flight from Sydney to Brisbane on July 19, 1960 gained infamy as Australia's (and arguably the worlds) first hijacked flight.
Armed with a gelignite bomb and a fully loaded sawn-off .22 calibre shot gun (complete with a spare, fully loaded magazine), Alex Hildebrandt stormed the cabin before being overpowered by airline staff. First Officer, Tom Bennett was lucky to miss a stray shot from the gun while himself and Captain D.R. Lawrence tackled the Russian hijacker over the skies of Brisbane.
While flight 408 was able to land safely it proved to be a mile-high battle that endangered the lives of 43 passengers and six TAA crew members.
This week Jack delves into this infamous crime with special interviews from survivors and their families.
