Most murderers are not crimonals in the accepted sense of the word. They are normal law-abiding people who lose control of their emotions through anger or frustration, and commit their one and only crime on the spur of the moment. For the most part their crimes are unintentional and therefore unremarkable.
That is why most of the murders that occur in our society recieve little publicity. They are one-day wonders in our newspaper and television news coverage, achieving only momentary notoriety.
I have lost count of the number of murders I have covered in a journalism career that spanned more than 50 years. But I remember with vivid clarity a handful that were so horrible or bizzare that they attracted and held the headlines for months, or even years.
