This week on Classic Crime Jack looked at a wartime crime - the sinking of the hospital ship Centaur in 1943.
The Centaur was sunk on the 14 May 1943 without warning by a Japanese submarine torpedo while approximately 50 miles North-East of Brisbane.
As the ship had been clearly marked as a hospital ship the act of sinking it was regarded as wartime atrocity. There were 332 people aboard the Centaur when it was hit and only 64 survived.
The sinking of the Centaur sparked official protest from the Australian Governement towards Japan, however the Japanese did not acknowlege their responsibility for the incidnet and the War Crimes Tribunal was not able to identify the submarine responsible.
